St. Mary’s College library

St. Mary’s College as its known, was established in the year June 1981 as an aided Arts and Science College affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The college is governed by St. Mary’s Cathedral Church Manarcadu which is situated 10.5 K.M. East of Kottayam. The College library came into being two years later on 1st June 1983, after the inception of the College in the present premises.

MISSION

The emblem of the college shows a balance and the open book in between them, symbolizes the commitment to equity and social justice for ensuring free access to information and knowledge to all without discrimination. The College Library too adopted the mission in its services.

TECHNICAL ORGANIZATION OF LIBRARY COLLECTION

The documents are catalogued and classified in the library according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) devised by Melvil Dewey and follows Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR-2). The earlier physical form of card catalogue is now available as OPAC (online public access catalogue). Presently users can search the library holdings via the remote access, Web OPAC

The library is partially automated with leading library management software SOUL 2.0 of INFLIBNET by the Ministry of Human Resources and updated in Sept 2019. The SOUL software is a user friendly for searching resources in the library, along with its positions and availability of status.

REFERENCE SERVICES

Library staff assists the users in searching for reference books and journals of their choice. The reference desk of the library provides library users with direction to use library materials, advice on library collections and services, and expertise information from multiple documents like Encyclopedia, Vignanakosham, yearbooks, directories, Gazettes etc is provided.

READING ROOM

A separate reading room is functioning for enriching the students’ knowledge. The magazines, periodicals, competitive and career periodicals, bulletins, Newspaper are available for their consultation. The students have to record in the register before consultation.

Exhibition on Environment Day, Identify your Medicinal Plants, Reading Day Competition like Quiz, Drawing, Essay writing Competitions, Vayana Maram Competition, Book Talks by Students, Birth /Death Anniversaries of Authors are also held in the reading room of the library.

REPROGRAPHIC SERVICES

Library provides specialized reprographic services like printing, scanning, in addition to the usual photocopying services is being done.

WORKING HOURS

The College library is open on all days except on Sundays and official Holidays of the State. The working hours of the library is from 9:30 to 4:30 pm. Saturdays is the maintenance day and rarely the circulation section will be open.

A. GENERAL RULES

Students admitted to the college are the members of the library. Student entering the Reading Room/the library stacks at the reading and reference counters should produce their identity cards at the entrance on demand. Before entering the library personal belongings/articles like books, umbrellas, bags etc. should be kept at the entrance at the places assigned for this purpose. Strict silence should be observed in and around the Library.

Magazines and papers should be replaced after reading from their places on the tables and stands. No mechanical reproduction or tracing of materials shall be made without the permission of the librarian.

Books of reference, illustrated and rare books, multivolume collections books, serial publications and periodicals will not be issued out. However, these may be consulted within the library after making necessary entries in the reference register.

Members of the staff may borrow books after making the necessary entries and signing in the issue registers. Teachers may keep text books with them for the whole academic year. Other books (not more than 7 at a time) may be kept up to 30 days. However, all books borrowed from the library should be returned before 30th April every year.

B. READERS TICKET

Books are issued to the students on borrower cards/Readers ticket. Electronic issue is also in progress along with readers’ ticket. Degree students are issued two Cards each, P.G. students 3 each. As a rule, only one book will be issued on a single card. The reader must surrender his/her card when a book is issued and take back the card when the book is returned.

First year P.G. and First year D.C. students should apply for Borrower Cards in the prescribed form (available in the library) within 40 days of their admission is closed. Cards are issued for the duration of the course. On completion of the course, students should return their library cards by the dates fixed for the purpose, Borrower cards are not transferable.

If their library card is lost Students should submit in writing to the librarian. To replace a lost card, a duplicate may be issued after one month, on payment of a penalty of Rs. 25/-.

C. RULES TO BORROW

The open shelf access system is prevailing in the library and the student has access to any section/shelf. After making his selection, the borrower must fill in the issue register (available at the counter), and get the book issued with their identity card. The book will be issued after the reader’s ticket and the identity card are checked.

Before leaving the counter the borrowers shall point out to the Librarian any damage or mutilation on the books they are taking. The Librarian will then make the necessary entries in the book and put his initials.

D. RULES TO RETURN BOOKS

The loan period is for 14 days. But in special circumstances the Librarian can call back any book at any time from a reader, even if the period of loan has not expired.

Books issued will be renewed. However, if there is no other demand, a book may be re-issued for one or more week after it is returned.

Delay in returning a book after the due date will entail a fine of rupee one per day on delay for each volume.

E. DAMAGE TO THE LIBRARY BOOKS BORROWED

Borrowers will be responsible for the loss of or damage of the books taken out by them. Marking on books with pencil or ink, soiling them, injury to pages/ear marking or binding, underlining, writing remarks etc. on pages, folding or tearing off pages, etc. will be held as serious charges.

If a book is lost, it should be reported to the librarian immediately. He will decide if the book is to be replaced or paid for. If a book is not returned within one month after the due date, it will be considered lost. No member will be allowed to borrow books until the dues, are cleared. If after the payment of the cost, a book lost or missing is recovered, the library will not accept it. Books taken out of stack for reference/consultation need not be put back on the shelves by the readers themselves but may be handed over to the Assistant-in-charge.

F. ARCHIVES

Newspapers Archive: – Print newspapers subscribed for the last one year is archived for reference.


Magazines Archive: – Popular magazines of (educational value) last one year is archived for reference.


College Magazine, Newsletter, and Calendars Archived: - Printed College magazines, Newsletter, Campus Calendar are kept as archives.


Career book: -- Competitive books, Bank Exam, UGC Net, PSC, UPSC, IAS Books are available.

G. THUMB RULE

The library arrears should be cleared by the students before they receive their Hall Tickets for final University Examinations or before obtaining the T.C. even if they leave before the completion of the course.

UGC-NETWORKING CENTRE

The UGC allocated Internet facility is available in this room which is gateway to literature. The staff helps to login to e- resource which involves web-based search engines, i.e., Google, Google Scholar or N-list electronic databases.

St Mary’s College is a registered user of N-List. The browse and search interface allows one to search e- journals, e-books and back issues and subscribed resources under the consortium for colleges. Digital Library is also functioning, with digital text, still images, audio, video, digital objects and documents in digital media format.
